44 Hygge Gift Ideas for a Cozy Home Office

If making your home office into a hygge style sanctuary is a goal for you, this ultimate hygge gift list will give you endless inspiration and ideas.

Why hygge?

At its core, Hygge (pronounced hue-guh, not hoo-gah), is a feeling. It’s about the atmosphere and experience of being warm, safe, cozy, and present with those you love. It goes hand-in-hand with practicing mindfulness and gratitude.

In The Little Book of Hygge, it’s referred to… “A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe, that we are shielded from the world.”

While I strive for the hygge feeling in my home and family life as a whole, I particularly pay attention to it for my home office.

Why? My home office is where I spend a great deal of my waking hours. It’s where I create, run my business, think, and connect with my online community.

I’ve done the cubicle farm with terrible fluorescent lighting and uncomfortable chairs. If you have too, then you know it’s in no way conducive to creativity or the cozy feeling we all want more of in our lives.

In the years since 2015, when I first started working from home, I’ve come to realize how vitally important my own space - and how it feels - is to my workflow and everyday feeling around my business.

Whether you are making your own home office cozier, shopping for a Christmas or holiday gift, birthday gift, or looking to make the hygge vibe part of your year-round life - you’re sure to find the perfect something on this ultimate hygge gift list.

Hygge Lighting

Lighting is a foundational part of the hygge aesthetic (it’s Chapter 1 in The Little Book of Hygge). Creating soft light with candles, dimmer lights, even salt lamps, is the first step in a hygge office vibe. The chandelier below is the actual one I bought for my home office. I installed a dimmer switch to create a pretty, rainbow-casting, cozy mood light.

I always have my salt lamp on as it casts a beautiful, soft pink glow in my office. It’s a lovely way to enter my space in the morning as I’m waking up and easing into the day.

My day officially starts when I light whatever candle I have and turn on the fairy lights behind my desk. I love running to Home Goods to stock up on scented soy candles, but if you don’t have one close, I love the one linked below (vanilla is my go-to scent).

Hygge Textiles

There’s nothing more Hygge than curling up with soft pillows and blankets. I meditate almost every day as part of my morning routine, and in our last home, I created a meditation corner in my office for my 40th birthday. In our new home, I’m fortunate to have enough space to recreate my mediation corner, although it’s a little smaller.

I like actually sitting in a chair (vs. on the ground), so a bean bag chair is perfect for me. I support my crossed ankles and back with pillows and snuggle into a soft blanket. Starting my day in a dark room with the glow of my salt lamp and sitting quietly is so nourishing.

Even though I have carpet in my home office, I tacked down my bright and beautiful area rug on top of it. Most of my decor is black, white, and shades of metal - so having a bright pop of color feels fresh and fun for my creative space. The rug linked below is almost exactly the one I have and it adds something special to the hygge vibe on cold dreary days.

Hygge Decor

When we moved in 2021, the only furniture we took was our sectional couch and framed photos, and a couple of pieces of art. I thought starting fresh would be fun, and while it is, I’ve gotten total analysis paralysis when it comes to choosing paint and decor.

I’m slowly adding to our home as I find the right pieces, but my home office is first priority since it’s where I spend so much time.

From pretty crystals (I’ve always been a rock collector, even as a kid), to art that makes me feel at ease and smile, to plants (I’m so much better at keeping them alive than I used to be).

If you have the space, adding an electric fireplace totally ups the hygge vibes too.

Hygge Clothing

So many more people have discovered the joy of working from home since the pandemic started. And by “joy” I mean comfy clothes all day. Even when I’m wearing a pretty or more “dressed up” top, I’m usually wearing yoga pants or sweatpants with slippers.

Even when the weather is warmer, I love wearing soft and fleecy clothing - because, well, it feels so hygge!

Hygge Kitchen

I couldn’t quite figure out what to name this section, because I’m not talking about your actual kitchen. I’m referring to what items I have a use in my home office for daily hygge living that are kitchen products.

Right after I finish my morning routine (usually meditation and my first cup of bulletproof coffee), I light a candle and enjoy my second cup of coffee at my desk as I go through my workday startup tasks.

My first cup of coffee is in the midst of family time and getting ready for the day and the kids out the door. It’s purely utilitarian. My second cup, however, is enjoyed slowly in a quiet house as I journal and decide on priorities for my day. Very hygge.

Then, throughout the day, I usually have at least one cup of hot tea and lots of water. I love giant mugs (the ones linked below are 20oz!) anything bulletproof and/or keto is my jam.

If you can swing it, I highly recommend keeping an electric kettle in your office. You could set up your own little coffee/tea station too!

Hygge Office Supplies

I’m admittedly addicted to fun and pretty office supplies. Journaling and coloring are some of my favorite ways to take a mental break during my day.

I love the bullet journal starter kit I’ve linked to below and the Mildliner highlighters are the absolute BEST. Then, take your home office hygge up a level by treating yourself to a beautiful fountain pen that you use for your daily planner or journal.

Hygge Books

And finally, here’s a selection of Hygge books - from coloring books to habits and lifestyles. The Little Book of Hygge was my introduction to the hygge lifestyle and I highly recommend it. The Minimalism & Hygge book is in my cart right now.

Conclusion:

Now you have everything you need to create a warm, cozy, home office vibe with a hygge aesthetic.

Remember, the hygge lifestyle is about how you feel - incorporating mindfulness and being present into your surroundings and who you’re with.
